The Red Hook Crit is an exciting and unsanctioned bike race that takes place every year at the Red Hook Cruise Terminal in Brooklyn. It's known for being dangerous as none of the bikes are fixed gear with no brakes. The turns are very tight and speeds run high. Wipeouts are frequent. I happened to acquire a new mirrorless camera the day before and this seemed like a prime opportunity to test its low-light capabilities!
I was riding laps around the park a few weeks ago, and someone on a very nice carbon bike pulled up alongside and asked if I'd ever thought about racing. I paused, considered my all-steel bike, and politely declined. I haven't been able to shake that conversation since. This past Saturday, I decided to venture uptown to 122nd and Riverside with my camera to watch a race in the blistering cold! I should also mention that this is the first bike race I've ever been to. I plan on going to many more. Maybe one day I'll be the one racing.
